Peter Griffin infamously had a column called “What Really Grinds My Gears” when his local TV station signed him up in one episode. Things that annoy him include Lindsay Lohan, bread being square, X-ray glasses that don’t work and a perceived lack of new “priest and rabbi” jokes.

Today, I find myself being even more irked by the Kenny Carpenters of this world. You know the ones – everything good is in the past and everything new must therefore be shit. Music was so much better in the 80s and 90s, the stuff today is crap – you’ve heard the same lines as me.

They won’t be inclined to believe me, but there was plenty of rubbish out back then as well. I’m currently compiling tracks for a set filled with early house records – anything from 1986 and earlier is eligible for consideration. Judging by some of the material I’m sifting through, a fair few tracks would have been considered rubbish even then, let alone now.

The difference is back then, you had little choice in the matter. Only a few new records came out each week, and the idea that all those were gold is utter fantasy. You just have to dig further these days in order to find the golden nuggets, but they are out there.

And if you’re ever struggling, help to narrow it down is out there. My Six On Saturday column is a good place to start…
