Fabric London announce that phones are banned on their dancefloor – but why oh why hasn’t Simon Dunmore chipped in with an objection yet?

Fabric London, ahead of their reopening in a few weeks – provided the government doesn’t change its mind on England’s lockdown restrictions again – have decided to send a message. They don’t want phones on their dancefloor anymore.

No photos, and no videos. Oh, except for professional photographers. Fabric have yet to announce whether this is now their equivalent of having your picture taken on a fairground ride and then having to pay through the nose for a copy. Or whether the inspiration for this was 90s nostalgia – or plague rave DJs who don’t want to be filmed

Anyway, one person who categorically opposes banning phones on the dancefloor is Simon Dunmore, head honcho at Defected. Back in January 2020, he posted this…

And let’s be honest, he’s right. Anyone seriously claiming they wouldn’t have taken a selfie with the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy and so on – had the technology to do so existed – is lying through their teeth.

But at my last check at 4pm, nothing on the subject…
