Time was that celebrities made the vast majority of their money in their main line of work. For instance, most of the movie stars in Hollywood years ago got their money out of starring in films. Some of them made so much that they could eventually retire, having so much money they never need work again.

Those days are almost long gone by now. And the same is true in the DJ world. With life being so uncertain these days, DJs have started joining a trend started by celebrities made famous by some highly dubious reality TV shows. And this trend is?

Charging money for personalised little messages. Non-entities caught onto this a while ago – people will often pay through the nose for an experience they feel is personal to them. Add to this the 1557 phrase of “a fool and his money are soon parted” from the poem Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry, and you’ve got a money spinner on your hands.

If you head over to Cameo, that’s exactly what you’ll find. A vast array of DJs and numerous other people offering to give you a personalised message – with some even offering corporate packages. Would you like Judge Jules to provide a message of positivity and encouragement to your team at work? Put €610 in his virtual palm and you’ve got a deal!

Elsewhere, you can get a message from the sharp-tongued EDM superstar that is deadmau5. €237 is his fee for wishing you a happy birthday or whatever else you have in mind. And seeing deadmau5 – real name Joel Zimmerman – recently had to cancel his appearance at MDL Beast Soundstorm and probably had to forego some of his fee as a result, he’ll need to do quite a few to make up the lost earnings.

Or if you fancy someone who’s been around for longer, how about DJ Jazzy Jeff? €132 gets you a personalised message – but if any DJs out there want a voice drop for their show, be prepared to really fork out big. It’ll set you back €770 for each one.

Everything has its price, its seems – and even their voices do too…
