Yes, people really are that weird! Kenny Carpenter was out and about this week – and couldn’t resist commenting on the utterly bizarre sights he was treated to…

Occasionally, you’ll encounter people in the world who play with your heads. With every utterance they come out with, you will inevitably start to wonder whether they’re going mad, or are they actually the sensible ones in a bonkers world. And Kenny Carpenter is one of those people.

Recently, the legendary house DJ – who has been DJing for some 700 years – was thinking of his mortality and posted a curious picture of him sitting casually on the ground next to what he said would be his “final resting place”. Or a little while ago, he was commenting on the utterly bizarre social media trend of people wishing happy birthday to themselves.

Well, his latest utterances on Facebook are possibly the strangest yet. He comments about a woman enjoying an ice cream with her dog – for everyone’s sake, I do hope she was recaptured quickly by the authorities – before disclosing what he saw another lady do after her dog laid down some fresh stools…

I’m beginning to think it’s the world that Carpenter resides in which is mad, not Kenny…

Kenny Carpenter’s sage advice to young people? Believe in yourself and take no notice of your critics – and it’s almost as if he can read my mind!

There are things about getting older which soon start to grate. Like the fact it takes just that little bit more effort to get up out of a chair. Or waking up in the morning with this mild but irritating pain in a place you’ve never had issues with before.

But it also comes with a few pleasant side effects. Not least the fact you stop caring what other people think. You realise things like peer pressure are nonsense – and you wish you’d realised things like this far sooner. The opinions of the people who know you aren’t always the most helpful ones.

And this is something Kenny Carpenter alludes to in a recent Facebook post…

This blog entirely agrees with Carpenter here. Many people told me that no one would like my music, yet I soon found a fair few did. The same happened after I launched Amateur’s House properly – the naysayers would have me believe there was no audience in looking at dance music with a critical eye. A growing readership, and a massively growing email subscription list proves them wrong.

If you don’t believe in yourself, persuading others to do so is no easy task…

Things that dance people think about, an occasional column: Kenny Carpenter says don’t wish yourself happy birthday!

Time now for a new feature which will pop up at admittedly intermittent intervals. You see, DJs, artists, singers, producers and everyone else involved in music don’t spend all of their time just talking about themselves and their music. Just most of it. I know, that might well come as a surprise to you too.

Well, this column is all about documenting those more everyday things that are on the minds of people in the world of dance music. And today, it’s the turn of Kenny Carpenter. Having been a DJ for at least 475 years to my knowledge – including at the notorious Studio 54 – he comes across overall as a fairly positive person. The only time this isn’t the case is when he’s talking about house music today – then he just starts sounding like a miserable old git.

But I digress. Here’s something that grinds Kenny Carpenter’s gears…

Well, he’ll get no disagreement from me on this one. Why indeed…
