Before I get my turn on the ducking stool, I ought to say I have a lot of time for Simon Dunmore, the boss man at Defected. He ran Cooltempo for a number of years. AM:PM was a beacon of quality house music when he ran it. And the success of Defected is wonderful to see, especially in this age when many of the labels we used to know are, well, no longer around.

But these two tweets from Dunmore do show a momentary lack of self-awareness, I think. Defected does more than its fair share of trading on past success, not just on its radio shows and releases, but by the facts of running Glitterbox and signing up the archives of entire past labels.

He might also want to have a word with some of the DJs that he books. Earlier this week, Defected posted a section of a classics set from Armand Van Helden. I thought I’d take a listen. For all the imagination in it, I might as well have been listening to one of Ministry Of Sound’s truly excreable classic compilations.

I’m all in favour of breaking new music and supporting new music, but honestly? Defected could do a damn sight better.
