Normally around this time of year, the Movement festival would be taking place in Detroit. The festival has roots going all the way back to 2001 and obviously could not go ahead last year.

So Paxahau have surprised a lot of people this year by putting on an event, albeit scaled down from normal. The names appearing are essentially a who’s who of Detroit. You name them, they’re on it.

Everyone except, of course, Derrick May. So why might that be? Have the organisers realised that having a man accused of sexual assault by anywhere between 18 and 60 different women present would not be a good idea? Or did they just send his invite to the wrong house?

A rumour reaches me that Carl Craig – whose wife now manages May after his previous manager took all his Transmat acts away to her new agency – has been trying to remedy this situation. My source tells me that Craig has been pestering at least one of the organisers to add May’s name to the list. I’m reliably told the response Craig received was frosty.

I worry Paxahau are hedging their bets, however. Their posters promoting the event include the ominous words “more to be announced”…
